Background
Portland Gas Storage Ltd (Portland Gas) believes in supporting local communities with projects that increase public understanding of geology and benefit education and the environment. In Dorset the Company set up the Portland Gas Trust (the Trust), based on the Isle of Portland, to work with projects across the county.
Aims and Objectives
A £1.5m project to transform the Old Engine Shed on Portland into an interpretation centre will be the highlight of the Trust’s work over the next few years. Situated on the cliffs above Portland Gas’ Dorset facility, the centre will have an audio visual room, display areas and café. The Engine Shed will function as a visitor attraction and an educational resource.
Thank you Awards for All !
Last year we ran a pilot project for local people to participate in environmental tasks, that proved to be very successful with over 50 different individuals spending time learning new skills and working at the site. We made an application to Awards for All and have been granted £4,475 towards the total project costs of £6,215.
A qualified waller will be employed to train volunteers in the art of dry stone walling and the local ranger will oversee scrub clearance and land management. Volunteers will also share information and encourage dog walkers to clean up after their pets making the whole area safe for everyone to enjoy.
Importantly this area overlooks the 2012 Olympic sailing venue and this project will greatly enhance the area for all to enjoy. We intend to hold events and activities every summer here for local people to participate in. During 2012 it will be a key site for community activities both for the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics.
